WEBVTT
00:00:00.040 --> 00:00:05.592
Explain to us the marriage between nutrition and skin and what kinds of things we need to be looking for.
00:00:06.801 --> 00:00:08.824
Yeah, it's exactly as you explained.
00:00:08.824 --> 00:00:12.112
I mean, it really reflects how you are health-wise.
00:00:12.112 --> 00:00:19.254
What we need to think about with the nutrition is you know there's certain things that we need to eat for skin health and certain things that we should avoid.
00:00:19.254 --> 00:00:23.480
One, you know, of the big culprits for skin health is sugar.
00:00:23.480 --> 00:00:25.402
One of the big culprits for skin health is sugar.
00:00:25.402 --> 00:00:27.763
Sugar isn't good for your skin.
00:00:27.763 --> 00:00:29.344
I mean, it isn't particularly good.
00:00:29.344 --> 00:00:31.606
It's not good for anything really, is it?
00:00:31.606 --> 00:00:34.670
But we're talking about skin today and skin health.
00:00:34.670 --> 00:00:37.171
There's actually something called sugar sag.
00:00:37.171 --> 00:00:51.197
If someone has a high sugar diet, the skin becomes like saggy and you find that you'll get puffiness around the eye area and you can also get discoloration on the skin through high sugar diet.
00:00:51.197 --> 00:00:53.668
So sugar is a no-no for skin health.
00:01:04.441 --> 00:01:11.926
Hi, I'm Glynis Woods-Mullins and I love to help women to vibe, to be more vibrant, intuitive, beautiful and empowered in midlife.
00:01:11.926 --> 00:01:13.570
So come on, let's vibe.
00:01:13.570 --> 00:01:26.953
Years ago, my husband and I had relocated temporarily to Dallas Texas.
00:01:26.953 --> 00:01:29.948
No shade on Dallas Texas, love Dallas Texas.
00:01:30.079 --> 00:01:37.867
But the water did not agree with my skin and it was so dried out and I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on.
00:01:37.867 --> 00:01:42.018
And don't forget to subscribe, like and comment and share this podcast.
00:01:42.018 --> 00:01:45.325
Have a fantastic day and don't forget to vibe.
00:01:59.391 --> 00:02:00.231
Bye-bye everybody.
00:02:00.231 --> 00:02:23.099
Nutritional therapist and esthetician, and has dedicated over 30 years to enhancing women's health and wellness, with a particular focus on perimenopause, menopause and beyond, and her approach blends the whole dietary issues along with health and mindset and lifestyle strategies to help support women as they go through menopause and midlife.
00:02:23.099 --> 00:02:34.730
I asked her today if we could talk specifically about something I know that she particularly loves to do, and that's working with women and their skin during that midlife phase when it just seems to be doing all kinds of things.
00:02:34.730 --> 00:02:37.725
Alison, welcome to the Vibe Living Podcast.
00:02:37.725 --> 00:02:39.070
It's wonderful to have you here today.
00:02:39.900 --> 00:02:40.920
Oh, thank you so much.
00:02:40.920 --> 00:02:42.361
It's a pleasure to be here.
00:02:42.361 --> 00:02:45.104
Thank you for having me on your podcast thank you so much.
00:02:45.125 --> 00:02:46.066
It's a pleasure to be here.
00:02:46.066 --> 00:02:48.268
Thank you for having me on your podcast, absolutely so.
00:02:48.268 --> 00:02:49.588
First of all, tell me how you got to marry.
00:02:49.588 --> 00:02:53.393
Being an esthetician and a nutritionist, what came first?
00:02:54.413 --> 00:02:55.655
Yeah, good question.
00:02:55.655 --> 00:03:08.044
I started off as a beauty esthetician, which is really a posh word for beauty therapist Because, long story short, I had very bad acne when I was a teenager and that kind of led me down the path of.
00:03:08.044 --> 00:03:09.567
I didn't want to take medications.
00:03:09.567 --> 00:03:15.693
I wanted to find out, even at that age is there, is there anything holistic that I can do to help my skin?
00:03:15.693 --> 00:03:28.664
And then I became very fascinated in skin health because what I did actually really help my skin and trained to be an esthetician did actually really help my skin and trained to be a esthetician.
00:03:28.664 --> 00:03:32.860
And then I very soon came to realize that aesthetic treatments are great, products are great, but you need the inside piece.
00:03:32.860 --> 00:03:36.612
You know you need the nutrition as well.
00:03:36.612 --> 00:03:39.381
So that's when I went back and studied nutritional therapy.
00:03:39.381 --> 00:03:50.478
And it combines beautifully because you know your skin, you, you see in someone's skin if they're they're glowing almost aren't they if they're feeling well and they're healthy and happy.
00:03:50.497 --> 00:03:59.906
You really, you really do see that in people's skin you know, people ask me all the time what it is that I do with my skin, and it's really simple.
00:03:59.906 --> 00:04:11.211
I kind of stopped using over-the-counter products when I had that incident in Dallas, texas, and I decided to figure out what I could do holistically for my skin.
00:04:11.211 --> 00:04:15.451
And the first thing I looked at was you know what was I eating?
00:04:15.451 --> 00:04:18.629
You know how had things changed when I got to Dallas?
00:04:18.629 --> 00:04:21.129
I'm not a meat eater, never have been.
00:04:21.129 --> 00:04:23.788
I haven't been a meat eater for like almost over 30 years.
00:04:23.788 --> 00:04:32.600
So it wasn't that that changed, but what did change was I wasn't eating as organically as I was when I was in California.
00:04:33.002 --> 00:04:35.151
The sourcing was a little different in Dallas.
00:04:35.151 --> 00:04:44.045
So I kind of went for the okie doke, you know, maybe frozen vegetables, which is not necessarily bad, but a steady diet of that, if that's not what your you know body's used to, may not be great.
00:04:44.045 --> 00:04:48.437
And and I wasn't able to get some of the organic stuff I used to like to get.
00:04:48.437 --> 00:04:49.882
I was having problems finding it.
00:04:49.882 --> 00:04:52.588
So I began to think well, does that have something to do with it?
00:04:52.588 --> 00:04:56.608
And I also took a look at the kind of water I was drinking.
00:04:57.009 --> 00:05:16.526
I didn't drink Dallas water, but I was drinking some other water, which wasn't the same as the water that I have been drinking in California, and they're just little tweaks here and there, and, but mostly, though, I noticed that the combination of the kind of water that was in Dallas versus the products that I was using was not a good match, because it just totally dried out my skin.
00:05:16.526 --> 00:05:30.889
I mean, I woke up one morning, literally Alison, and I had little wrinkle, creepy skin all in my forehead and all through here, and I was like, oh my god, now that time I was not quite 60, so I said, oh my god, the aging process has begun.
00:05:30.889 --> 00:05:34.341
But but I was able to roll it back.
00:05:34.341 --> 00:05:43.307
So explain to us the marriage between nutrition and skin and what kinds of things we need to be looking for yeah, it's exactly as you explained.
00:05:43.327 --> 00:05:49.427
I mean, it really reflects how you are health-wise and before I start, I must say you have amazing skin.
00:05:49.427 --> 00:05:53.922
Your skin looks beautiful, really, really fantastic skin.
00:05:53.922 --> 00:05:55.144
But what?
00:05:55.144 --> 00:06:08.971
What we need to think about with the nutrition is that you know, there's certain things that we need to eat for skin health and for certain things that we need to eat for skin health and certain things that we should avoid, and one of the big culprits for skin health is sugar.
00:06:08.971 --> 00:06:13.175
You know, sugar isn't good for your skin.
00:06:13.175 --> 00:06:17.017
I mean, it isn't particularly good for it's not good for anything, really, is it?
00:06:17.017 --> 00:06:20.065
But we're talking about skin today and skin health.
00:06:20.086 --> 00:06:22.492
There's actually something called sugar sag.
00:06:22.492 --> 00:06:31.487
Now, I know that sounds horrible, but what it basically is, without getting too technical, is it's a process that happens in the body.
00:06:31.487 --> 00:06:33.012
That's called glycation.
00:06:33.012 --> 00:06:58.444
Now, glycation if you have a high sugar diet and you've got a lot of excess sugar in your bloodstream, what happens is it combines with protein and when they combine together, they produce a product that we don't want advanced glycation end products, and these break down collagen and elastin.
00:06:58.444 --> 00:07:14.903
So you can actually see in the skin, if someone has a high sugar diet, that the skin becomes like saggy and you find that you'll get puffiness around the eye area and you can also get discoloration on the skin through through high sugar diet.
00:07:14.903 --> 00:07:17.408
So sugar is is a no-no for skin health.
00:07:17.428 --> 00:07:19.533
You know, that's what.
00:07:19.533 --> 00:07:26.026
I'm stopping right there real quickly because that's very interesting, because you're right, sugar basically is poison, it just absolutely is.
00:07:26.026 --> 00:07:28.630
But that made me think about something.
00:07:28.630 --> 00:07:35.295
One of the things that I took advantage of when I was in Dallas was all those home-baked sweets.
00:07:35.295 --> 00:07:41.677
You know, we had a couple friends who lived down there and they made all their cakes and stuff from scratch.
00:07:41.677 --> 00:07:52.990
And I've never been a big dessert or cake eater, but I had lemon pound cake almost every day for like a month and at the end of that month that's when all this stuff started showing up.
00:07:52.990 --> 00:07:57.730
I didn't know I didn't tie it to sugar, but I did stop eating it because I said what am I doing?
00:07:57.730 --> 00:07:59.132
I gained weight, what am I doing?
00:07:59.132 --> 00:08:02.144
But yes, that was one of the things.
00:08:02.144 --> 00:08:06.072
That was a direct correlation to what was going on with my skin, but I didn't tie it to the sugar.
00:08:06.072 --> 00:08:07.153
So that's amazing.
00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:08.800
Yeah, sugar.
00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:16.435
You can really see, amongst other things, but that when we're looking specifically at the skin, sugar has a big role in skin health.
00:08:16.435 --> 00:08:25.095
And another area when we think about nutrition is, again, this isn't an area that you necessarily think about with the skin, but it's gut health.
00:08:25.095 --> 00:08:30.105
You know your digestion, your digestive track.
00:08:30.105 --> 00:08:37.196
You know you need to feed that with lots of lovely fiber rich foods and protein and healthy fats.
00:08:37.196 --> 00:08:45.373
Because if you're suffering from you know problems with your gut or digestive tract that can be seen in the skin.
00:08:45.854 --> 00:08:53.347
There is something called I don't know if you've heard of something called leaky gut- oh yes, I have a certification in gut health, so I know exactly what you're talking about.
00:08:53.347 --> 00:09:00.759
But let's talk about that, because you a lot of people hear about gut health, but I also hear a lot of misinformation about good health.
00:09:00.759 --> 00:09:02.785
So explain to us what a leaky gut is.
00:09:03.748 --> 00:09:04.730
Yeah, leaky gut.
00:09:04.730 --> 00:09:06.240
It doesn't sound very pleasant, does it?
00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:24.462
But what it basically is that the walls of your intestine are actually very thin and they're made up of cells and when you suffer from it's also called intestinal permeability, because you know, this is the passage for all the food that you've eaten to go through your digestion.
00:09:24.462 --> 00:09:32.520
But what happens with leaky gut is that it's a bit like a brick wall, if you think, but the gaps between the wall become bigger.
00:09:32.520 --> 00:09:48.019
It's not solid anymore and little particles of food and what you've been digesting can escape out of the walls of the gut into the circulation and this can cause many symptoms.
00:09:48.019 --> 00:09:51.350
But when we think of, when we look at the skin, you know it can.
00:09:51.350 --> 00:09:54.922
It can be seen as allergies, irritation, you know.
00:09:54.922 --> 00:09:57.746
Redness, itchy skin, you know.
00:09:57.746 --> 00:10:04.442
All of a sudden just breakouts for no reason so health is is paramount to to skin health.
00:10:04.881 --> 00:10:06.803
And why do we get leaky gut?
00:10:06.803 --> 00:10:08.924
You know what is that to do with it.
00:10:08.924 --> 00:10:13.268
There's many, many different factors, but you know things like stress.
00:10:13.268 --> 00:10:21.234
Again going back to, you know a diet high in ultra processed foods, high sugar foods.
00:10:21.234 --> 00:10:34.543
You know all of those things irritate the lining of the gut and if you're vulnerable to food sensitivities or you have allergies to certain things, then you know your gut will be more sensitive.
00:10:34.543 --> 00:10:43.950
So what you want to do, it doesn't have to be difficult, you know eat a diet full of just nourishing, whole foods.
00:10:43.950 --> 00:10:50.750
You want to get rid of all these packaged ultra-processed foods that have so many different ingredients on them.
00:10:50.750 --> 00:10:57.326
I mean, I say to my clients if you can't understand what the ingredient is, then you most probably shouldn't be eating it.
00:10:58.532 --> 00:10:59.655
Very good rule of thumb.
00:10:59.655 --> 00:11:00.620
I absolutely agree.
00:11:00.620 --> 00:11:06.249
You know it's interesting because here in the States we have something called the standard American diet.
00:11:06.249 --> 00:11:15.160
I call it, and so do some other folks, the SAD diet because it is the antithesis of so many things that are going on in our country when it comes to our overall health.
00:11:15.160 --> 00:11:26.350
You know, exacerbated chronic disease, especially like type 2 diabetes, those inflated bellies, skin issues a lot of are suffering from psoriasis, acne.
00:11:26.350 --> 00:11:35.130
You know so many things and it's tied directly to, I feel, two things our diet and the pace within which we live our lives.
00:11:35.130 --> 00:11:48.225
Stress, which is the culprit and I'm gonna start talking about stress from an emotional standpoint, but also from a chemical standpoint and hormones and cortisol and how cortisol impacts our overall skin health.
00:11:48.225 --> 00:11:49.505
Can you talk about that a little bit?
00:11:50.710 --> 00:11:53.412
Yeah, I totally agree with what you're saying.
00:11:53.412 --> 00:11:56.313
I mean, stress is so detrimental for our health, isn't it?
00:11:56.313 --> 00:12:01.798
And we live in a society where everybody seems to be suffering from chronic stress.
00:12:01.798 --> 00:12:06.000
It's terrible for our health and they're very stressed.
00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:07.923
You know they're constantly in this stressed state.
00:12:07.923 --> 00:12:21.591
Your body, your body feels it's under attack.
00:12:21.591 --> 00:12:22.254
You know, we're quite primitive.
00:12:22.254 --> 00:12:25.842
Really, I think the society that we're living in now, our bodies weren't really made for that, were they?
00:12:25.842 --> 00:12:40.325
Things have moved so quickly that you know, there's so much technology, there's so much of everything everywhere, and when we have constant stress, our body releases stress hormones, cortisol being one of them.
00:12:40.325 --> 00:12:51.278
And cortisol has many different effects and it's detrimental when it's long term and it can be seen in the skin, as, again, you know, you've got quite high.
00:12:51.278 --> 00:12:54.403
Cortisol makes you release sugar into the system.
00:12:54.812 --> 00:13:07.937
It increases your blood sugar levels so you're going down this, you know the sugar side, the the sugar route again, and also high cortisol levels store fat.
00:13:07.937 --> 00:13:11.485
Cortisol actually is a fat storing hormone.
00:13:11.485 --> 00:13:18.114
So if you're constantly stressed it's very difficult, if you're looking at weight management, to lose weight.
00:13:18.114 --> 00:13:38.116
But it's seen in the skin, you know the skin becomes stressed, it becomes dry, becomes irritated because it feels, you know, your whole body is up in this kind of like stressful mode that you really you really can't, you know, treat the skin successfully if someone is very, very stressed.
00:13:38.157 --> 00:13:59.903
I've seen that in my, my clients working with treatments it's really interesting because we have a tendency to tie stress just to the whole emotional thing, but it impacts every area of our health in ways like, for instance, you mentioned the thing about the stress and the glucose levels rising, and many times that's what can throw people right into that type 2 diabetes diagnosis.
00:13:59.903 --> 00:14:07.893
And now you're on this whole other trail of more medication being introduced to your system that can also impact your stress.
00:14:07.893 --> 00:14:11.601
But let's talk about something else that will impact your skin health.
00:14:11.601 --> 00:14:18.211
But there's something else that I see a lot in the stores and I want to get your opinion on this and whether or not this is something we should be doing as midlife women.
00:14:18.211 --> 00:14:29.510
I see so many things about collagen collagen supplements, collagen powders, collagen in the makeup that you use, or whatever.
00:14:29.510 --> 00:14:30.392
What?
00:14:30.392 --> 00:14:34.174
What is collagen, why is it, and do any of these things work?
00:14:35.616 --> 00:14:38.458
Yeah, I get asked that question a lot.
00:14:38.458 --> 00:14:47.307
Now, collagen if you think, collagen is in our skin, amongst other parts of the body, and that's really what gives your skin this lovely plump look.
00:14:47.307 --> 00:14:53.514
It's like the building blocks of the skin collagen and elastin.
00:14:53.514 --> 00:15:00.318
And as we get older, especially when we come into menopause because of the decline in estrogen, it really affects our collagen.
00:15:00.318 --> 00:15:08.118
We lose collagen basically quite considerably, so that's when we start seeing the fine lines and wrinkles.
00:15:09.780 --> 00:15:11.484
Collagen supplements it's the same.
00:15:11.484 --> 00:15:13.493
I mean, I live in europe, it's the same.
00:15:13.493 --> 00:15:25.136
It's become this very in thing, hasn't it to take collagen supplements now, when, when I talk about anything to do with this, I I talk about evidence-based right.
00:15:25.136 --> 00:15:28.003
You know, I look at what the research is saying.
00:15:28.003 --> 00:15:39.576
And when we look at research for collagen and we're doing now we're talking collagen supplements it's predominantly the effects that they've seen that are positive or is on joint health.
00:15:39.576 --> 00:15:56.965
You know, if you're suffering because as you, as you age, you can start getting joint pains and a reduction because we need collagen for our joints as well, so they've that's been shown that it it helps with joint pains and making your joints healthier.
00:15:57.750 --> 00:16:12.065
When it comes to skin hair nails, there is a bit of a question mark there and I'm always very careful what I say because some of my clients that use it have really seen a difference.
00:16:12.065 --> 00:16:22.793
I've really seen a difference, even though there isn't really the like quality studies to back it up yet.
00:16:22.793 --> 00:16:25.836
People you know, I have seen people that have really really sweared by it.
00:16:26.417 --> 00:16:31.322
So I think I always wondered about absorption, because that's always an issue with supplements.
00:16:31.322 --> 00:16:41.756
You know, a lot of people spend so much money on these supplements and many times a lot of it ends up being sloughed up in the urine.
00:16:41.756 --> 00:16:42.399
It's not absorbed by the body.
00:16:42.399 --> 00:16:46.914
So I'm thinking, okay, well, if that's happening with collagen, are there food sources and things that we can eat that can help increase our collagen?
00:16:48.197 --> 00:16:50.363
yeah, one of the great products.
00:16:50.363 --> 00:16:52.951
Obviously, if you don't eat meat, this isn't for you.
00:16:52.951 --> 00:17:00.018
But bone broth, that is amazing for collagen and you can just make that at home with you.
00:17:00.018 --> 00:17:09.146
Know, if you eat meat, if you've got bone, you just put it in a slow cooker and cook it for around eight hours and you get more of it like a bouillon and you can just drink that.
00:17:09.146 --> 00:17:18.252
That's very, very rich in collagen.
00:17:18.252 --> 00:17:20.961
But you want to be eating things like tinned salmon, sardines you know that still have bones in in the.
00:17:20.961 --> 00:17:22.566
That is very, very good for collagen.
00:17:23.027 --> 00:17:25.974
But yeah, I agree with you when you think of the absorption of collagen.
00:17:25.974 --> 00:17:30.190
Okay, you know that it's going into the gut, into the intestine.
00:17:30.190 --> 00:17:30.909
It most likely will be absorbed into the.
00:17:30.909 --> 00:17:32.231
Some of it will be absorbed into the circulation.
00:17:32.231 --> 00:17:34.106
But you know it's not all of a sudden going to say, oh, hold on a minute, I'm going to go to the.
00:17:34.106 --> 00:17:34.726
It most likely will be absorbed into the.
00:17:34.726 --> 00:17:35.468
Some of it will be absorbed into the circulation.
00:17:35.468 --> 00:17:40.602
But you know it's not all of a sudden going to say, oh, hold on a minute, I'm going to go to the skin.
00:17:40.602 --> 00:17:46.380
It's just going to be in the circulation, as you know collagen.
00:17:46.380 --> 00:17:55.241
But, like I say I'm, there's a bit of a question mark there, because some clients and friends of mine that use it have seen a difference.
00:17:55.241 --> 00:17:56.243
But then you've got.
00:17:56.243 --> 00:17:59.258
I think you've got the placebo effect as well, haven't you?
00:17:59.258 --> 00:18:04.461
If you take something and you think that it's going to be helping, then it does, which is great.
00:18:05.089 --> 00:18:16.203
Our minds are very powerful and so much of what goes on with our overall health and how we adapt as we begin to get older has to do with mindset.
00:18:16.203 --> 00:18:18.814
Tell us a little bit about that, because I know you talk about that.
00:18:18.814 --> 00:18:23.332
When it comes to mindset, menopause and even skincare, how do those all marry?
00:18:24.515 --> 00:18:26.679
Yeah, that mindset is key.
00:18:26.679 --> 00:18:28.321
And it's difficult, isn't it?
00:18:28.321 --> 00:18:31.998
Because when you're coming into menopause, you can actually feel terrible.
00:18:31.998 --> 00:18:34.171
You've got all these hormones all over the place.
00:18:34.171 --> 00:18:46.962
You can have various different symptoms and you know, it's very easy for me to sit here and say, oh well, you should embrace this phase positively, which does make a difference, if you can.
00:18:46.962 --> 00:18:51.459
You know, if you're positive, it reduces stress, it makes you happier.
00:18:52.019 --> 00:19:07.207
But I think it's like you have to be mindful of how you talk and your kind of self-talk, how you talk to yourself and how you think, because it's very easy to get kind of whirlwind down into this tunnel, isn't it of negativity?
00:19:07.207 --> 00:19:10.054
Oh, I feel terrible, I've got this, I've got that.
00:19:10.054 --> 00:19:14.142
And I think it becomes even worse when you're with your friends, which you know.
00:19:14.142 --> 00:19:18.349
I'm not saying that it's good, isn't it to be able to talk and get it off your chest and everything?
00:19:18.349 --> 00:19:21.111
But mindset is key and it's also.
00:19:21.111 --> 00:19:39.795
You know, there's a huge connection between our brain and there's a very interesting science that's relatively new, where they're looking at you know how your thoughts and how you think and feel affects your skin.
00:19:42.655 --> 00:19:44.617
Interesting, interesting.
00:19:44.617 --> 00:19:47.320
Well, you know how they talk about worry lines.
00:19:47.320 --> 00:19:48.582
That's the first thing that came to my mind.
00:19:48.582 --> 00:19:56.250
When you're worried or upset about something, or when you're crying or whatever, your muscles are engaged in a different way than they would be if you were smiling.
00:19:56.250 --> 00:19:58.172
But that's amazing.
00:19:58.172 --> 00:20:10.484
Practitioner myself, I believe in a holistic approach mind, body, spirit, that all of that comes into play when it comes to being well.
00:20:10.484 --> 00:20:18.106
So if you were to give women in midlife some tips on things they need to be looking at to maintain good skin health, what would that be?
00:20:19.815 --> 00:20:22.003
Yeah, it's multifactorial.
00:20:22.003 --> 00:20:23.147
You need to be looking at.
00:20:23.147 --> 00:20:24.594
It's a bit like a jigsaw, isn't it?
00:20:24.594 --> 00:20:27.038
Exactly as you said, with the holistic approach.
00:20:27.038 --> 00:20:29.384
You know, look at the nutrition piece.
00:20:29.384 --> 00:20:33.397
One very simple thing hydrate, drink water.
00:20:33.397 --> 00:20:33.898
Very.
00:20:33.898 --> 00:20:36.184
It might sound very basic, but it is.
00:20:36.806 --> 00:20:46.749
Yeah, it is really important for skin health and for overall health remove processed foods, ultra processed foods, and eat whole foods.
00:20:46.749 --> 00:20:48.397
That that is really crucial.
00:20:48.397 --> 00:20:52.465
And then, when it comes to you know, looking after your skin.
00:20:52.465 --> 00:21:04.307
As far as products go, you know that there's an array of different products that you can use and I think it's very individual depending on how much time you've got and you know how interested you are in products.
00:21:04.307 --> 00:21:07.625
But one key thing is to protect your skin from the sun.
00:21:07.625 --> 00:21:16.306
You know, using a sun protection factor and research is saying with a minimum of SPF 30.
00:21:16.306 --> 00:21:25.843
And these days, you know, quality day creams have sun protection factor in, so you don't need to be using a separate day cream.
00:21:25.843 --> 00:21:28.641
But it's very important all the time really.
00:21:28.681 --> 00:21:39.943
But especially as we age as women, because so many things start happening with the skin due to the decline in estrogen and progesterone, we can start, you know, these pigmentations can start appearing.
00:21:39.943 --> 00:21:42.775
We can suddenly get, you know, these fine lines and wrinkles.
00:21:42.775 --> 00:21:46.489
So some protection and then moisture you.
00:21:46.489 --> 00:21:50.519
You know we really need moisture because that's key.
00:21:50.519 --> 00:22:00.586
So, like moisturising night creams, masks, all of those wonderful products, and then you know, if it's your thing, then there's fantastic treatment.
00:22:00.586 --> 00:22:11.703
You know, if you go to a professional esthetician, there's wonderful facial and body treatments that you can, you can have that not only improve your skin but they're very relaxing as well.
00:22:11.703 --> 00:22:18.266
They make you, you know, relax and feel very pampered, which is important what about the people?
00:22:18.465 --> 00:22:28.701
as they get older, their skin begins to change and they get this patchy skin, one part of the skin's oily, maybe around their nose or whatever and it's really really dry underneath their eyes.
00:22:28.701 --> 00:22:31.566
Normal on top, you know, pimply at the bottom.
00:22:31.566 --> 00:22:33.409
What you get?
00:22:33.409 --> 00:22:37.343
This polythra of skin ailments that come at different times.
00:22:37.343 --> 00:22:40.738
Uh, but it's definitely something that you can correlate to midlife.
00:22:40.738 --> 00:22:45.921
Are there any things that you would suggest that they could do to kind of even out some of those issues?
00:22:53.454 --> 00:22:55.119
It's finding the right products for your skin.
00:22:55.119 --> 00:23:10.388
So I think, and I see so much, that women are using products that are wrong for their skin type because they maybe have read somewhere or somebody just briefly said oh, these are okay for you, but you need to go to a professional and for them to look at your skin under a magnifier and, really, you know, advise you on what's best for you.
00:23:10.388 --> 00:23:16.323
But it's all about balancing your skin, and moisture is key.
00:23:16.323 --> 00:23:26.289
Even if you find that you're oilier, you still need moisture, because oily skin is an overproduction of sebum, which is the oil on the skin.
00:23:26.289 --> 00:23:41.025
Hydration is water in the skin that we all need, and drinking water, eating healthily all of that piece helps to balance your skin if you find that you're having breakouts or dry air.
00:23:41.045 --> 00:23:43.416
I have to share with you my skin regime.
00:23:43.416 --> 00:23:44.381
You tell me what you think.
00:23:44.381 --> 00:24:01.537
I created my own little concoction after my experience in Dallas because it scared me so much, because I literally woke up one day and I had wrinkles and I found out later through my research that it was just dead skin that I need to get rid of through a good scrub.
00:24:01.537 --> 00:24:06.788
So I started, you know, creating my own scrubs and I use a brown sugar scrub.
00:24:06.788 --> 00:24:27.442
I use brown sugar, raw sugar, raw brown sugar and then white sugar granules the only time I use sugar for the abrasiveness and then I mix that with olive oil and lavender and rose not rose, geranium, but rose, because lavender has healing essential oils.
00:24:27.442 --> 00:24:30.621
You have to make sure they're essential, not stuff that you buy at the grocery store.
00:24:30.641 --> 00:24:35.320
You get the real stuff but it has healing modalities, both the lavender and the rose.
00:24:35.320 --> 00:24:44.240
So I started using that and immediately I wouldn't say the wrinkles went away immediately, but that gray power went away because I got rid of the dead skin.
00:24:44.240 --> 00:25:02.803
And then I use coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil along with my rose, my lavender and vetiver In a little clear bottle, shake it up, I put it on in the morning and or night and wash.
00:25:02.803 --> 00:25:04.955
It takes the because the coconut oil takes off makeup.
00:25:04.955 --> 00:25:10.728
So it takes off the makeup and all that stuff and then I use it as a moisturizer when I go to bed.
00:25:11.056 --> 00:25:20.402
It's kind of oily, you know, because my desk has all these olive oil imprints on it, because I use it on my body, I use it everywhere and that's what I use.
00:25:20.402 --> 00:25:32.488
Now, for some people they say that, well, that's just too oily for my skin, you know, because maybe they already have oily skin and I think I might have had, you know, a combination to dry skin after my experience in Dallas.
00:25:32.488 --> 00:25:37.974
But for me it absorbs my skin, it just sinks it in.
00:25:37.974 --> 00:25:47.201
Now there's some days where my skin, even after I do that, is still a little dry, and so I use a little bit extra, more water because I don't dry my face.
00:25:47.201 --> 00:25:52.230
I, you know, use this concoction, I rinse it with water and I let it air dry.
00:25:52.230 --> 00:25:58.153
Sometimes I need to go back and put more water on and then it seems to be fine.
00:25:58.153 --> 00:25:59.055
So what are your thoughts?
00:25:59.075 --> 00:25:59.556
about all of that.
00:25:59.576 --> 00:26:01.856
Yeah, interesting I mean I'm a big fan of aromatherapy oils.
00:26:01.856 --> 00:26:05.119
Interesting, I mean, I'm a big fan of aromatherapy oils.
00:26:05.119 --> 00:26:09.163
You know, good quality aromatherapy oils are fantastic.
00:26:09.163 --> 00:26:16.409
You know they they're so healing and can be used in many different ways in, you know, holistic massage and products.
00:26:16.409 --> 00:26:20.673
But no, I mean if it is so individual, isn't it?
00:26:20.673 --> 00:26:30.865
If it works for you and it obviously does, because your skin looks amazing, then great and and I think peeling the skin.
00:26:30.884 --> 00:26:34.056
That's a good point that you've brought up that we need to exfoliate the skin because our skin is.
00:26:34.056 --> 00:26:37.221
We do that roughly around twice a week.
00:26:37.221 --> 00:26:44.560
Oh, okay, okay, especially if you do suffer from dry skin, definitely twice a week.
00:26:44.560 --> 00:26:49.262
If you find your skin is more on the oily side, then you know, once once a week is enough.
00:26:49.262 --> 00:26:53.897
But you know there's an again, there's an array of so many different products to peel the skin.
00:26:54.420 --> 00:26:57.807
You know alpha hydroxide acids, which, which are?
00:26:57.807 --> 00:27:04.836
They are very effective on peeling the skin because they they help to break down the bombs and remove the dead skin.
00:27:04.836 --> 00:27:11.323
Because when you remove the dead skin, it helps with cell renewal, because your cells are renewing.
00:27:11.323 --> 00:27:12.425
It's kind of like they're going up.
00:27:12.425 --> 00:27:13.817
They're renewing all the time.
00:27:13.817 --> 00:27:20.660
So as we get older, this cell renewal slows down so we want to kind of stimulate that.
00:27:20.660 --> 00:27:30.010
So peeling the skin makes your products work better because you haven't got that layer of dead skin and it helps with cell cell renewal and it also gives you that glow.
00:27:30.010 --> 00:27:31.032
You know it really.
00:27:31.032 --> 00:27:36.291
It's really important to peel the skin with a product, not especially during menopause.
00:27:36.291 --> 00:27:38.679
I wouldn't advise any sort of harsh products.
00:27:38.679 --> 00:27:48.288
You know, be careful that you don't buy anything that's got really abrasive corn or you know corns in or some of some of those things.
00:27:48.288 --> 00:27:54.026
Always go to an esthetician and ask and buy quality products.
00:27:54.066 --> 00:27:58.801
That that's really my advice are there anything that we should be?
00:27:58.801 --> 00:28:13.738
Is there anything we should be looking at when it comes to the labels that are big no-nos for midlife skin, you know, you look at the label and say, oh, I shouldn't do that I think really, when this, I mean there's there's so many fantastic products on the market now, really real quality products.
00:28:14.318 --> 00:28:20.500
When it comes to ingredients, I always say to people you know, just look on the back if there's loads of things on there.
00:28:20.500 --> 00:28:28.607
You know different chemicals and preservatives and you know ingredients that you you may asking why is that in there?
00:28:28.607 --> 00:28:41.127
Then try and get something as natural as possible, I would suggest, but there's not any major ingredients that I can think of that you should avoid, specifically for midlife.
00:28:41.127 --> 00:28:44.324
It's just making sure that you're using quality products.
00:28:44.324 --> 00:28:51.526
Ingredients like hyaluronic acid are wonderful because it's a moisture binding ingredient.
00:28:51.526 --> 00:28:53.402
It's naturally in the skin.
00:28:53.402 --> 00:29:00.923
But products that contain hyaluronic acid are wonderful for women as we age, and retinol N-A.
00:29:01.695 --> 00:29:04.962
Yeah, let me ask you about that, because that's another thing I see at the grocery stores.
00:29:05.635 --> 00:29:05.836
I do.
00:29:05.856 --> 00:29:09.807
I see them at the grocery stores and I see them behind the counter in department stores.
00:29:09.807 --> 00:29:11.157
I see them on Amazon.
00:29:11.157 --> 00:29:16.989
All that, what is retinol and how does it help our skin and how do we source it?
00:29:16.989 --> 00:29:18.178
Where should we go for it?
00:29:18.178 --> 00:29:22.982
I hear you say esthetician is a good point, but first of all, what is it and why is it?
00:29:23.022 --> 00:29:23.364
important.
00:29:23.364 --> 00:29:33.366
Retinol is vitamin A basically, and vitamin a has uh, amongst other things, has an appealing effect on the skin, so it's very rejuvenating.
00:29:33.366 --> 00:29:37.780
It is also has a rebalancing effect, so it can be used.
00:29:37.780 --> 00:29:49.498
There's there's many different strengths of it, but different products that contain retinol, so it can be used on people that have breakouts or even acne skin to help to rebalance the skin.
00:29:49.498 --> 00:29:52.527
But it's very good for anti-aging.
00:29:53.229 --> 00:30:02.638
And what I would suggest is, if you're not used to using retinol, one thing that you absolutely shouldn't do is go out in the sun with these products on your skin.
00:30:02.638 --> 00:30:11.303
It's something that you would use in the evening as a nighttime product and also, I mean you should be wearing a sunscreen all the time anyway.
00:30:11.303 --> 00:30:22.201
But even more so if you're using retinol products, because you're exfoliating the skin and the skin can become more sensitive If you haven't used retinol before.
00:30:22.201 --> 00:30:27.848
Just take it easy in the beginning, maybe twice a week to start with.
00:30:27.848 --> 00:30:45.682
You kind of have to build up, otherwise your skin can become quite sensitive and again, you know, there's so many different products that I would talk to somebody that understands the skin rather than just buying something off the shelf, because maybe it's the wrong strength for your skin type.
00:30:45.682 --> 00:30:47.806
Maybe it's too harsh.
00:30:47.806 --> 00:30:49.809
So you know, just be careful.
00:30:49.809 --> 00:30:53.862
It's a fantastic ingredients, but I think you have to give it a little bit of respect.
00:30:55.086 --> 00:31:01.125
Okay, I got this one last question to ask you, because I think that people really need to be thinking about this.
00:31:01.125 --> 00:31:03.542
We are coffee drinkers.
00:31:03.542 --> 00:31:17.468
We love a little bit of glass of wine in the evening, you know, and maybe we're not sleeping as much as we should be, and you know we might eat some fresh vegetables every once in a while, but we might skip that and eat a pizza instead.
00:31:17.468 --> 00:31:21.214
How is all of that overall impacting our skin?
00:31:21.214 --> 00:31:27.486
Is it impacting our skin even more so as we age, or is that just an old wives tale?
00:31:29.693 --> 00:31:32.944
no, it impacts everything, really all of those things that you've said.
00:31:32.944 --> 00:31:39.750
And it does impact your skin because when you, when you're eating those sort of things I mean everything's okay occasionally, isn't it?
00:31:39.750 --> 00:31:40.332
You know I'm not.
00:31:40.332 --> 00:31:47.491
I realize that we have to have a life you can't but you know you have to have everything in moderation.
00:31:47.491 --> 00:31:51.638
It's okay to have that pizza occasionally, but not every day.
00:31:52.180 --> 00:32:00.700
But when you eat like processed foods or, you know, junk foods, as they're called, you're not sleeping, you're maybe stressed.
00:32:00.700 --> 00:32:07.940
It creates this, you know, this buildup of stress, of blood sugar balance.
00:32:07.940 --> 00:32:16.950
You know your blood sugar will be high, you're not sleeping, which is like this vicious circle, because high, you're not sleeping, which is it's like this vicious circle because when you're not sleeping, you actually crave carbohydrates.
00:32:16.950 --> 00:32:23.819
So it all becomes this vicious circle.
00:32:23.819 --> 00:32:28.651
And these foods and and caffeine, caffeine, it increases blood sugar.
00:32:28.651 --> 00:32:34.400
It, you know it makes you anxious, stops you sleeping.
00:32:34.400 --> 00:32:47.096
You know that you really have to look after yourself and these sort of foods that you mentioned aren't going to help you because you're not going to be sleeping well, you're going to be stressed.
00:32:47.136 --> 00:32:52.000
So you'll see it in the skin yeah, that makes that makes a lot of sense.
00:32:52.000 --> 00:32:57.837
Now I know you have some things coming up that could be very helpful for women when it comes to their skincare.
00:32:57.837 --> 00:33:01.214
Tell us a little bit about the events that you're going to be sponsoring over the next few months.
00:33:02.438 --> 00:33:10.423
Yeah, I have something very exciting actually that I've been working on for the last year my 21-day Reboot and Reset program.
00:33:10.423 --> 00:33:13.682
It's a 21-day Reboot and Reset for women.
00:33:13.682 --> 00:33:20.679
It's a 21-day reboot and reset for women over 40, to revive your body and brain, for renewed energy and focus.
00:33:20.679 --> 00:33:26.676
So it's a wonderful 21 days where we're really focusing on foods.
00:33:26.676 --> 00:33:30.448
There's a meal plan, shopping list very easy to follow.
00:33:30.448 --> 00:33:32.038
We're going to work on sleep.
00:33:32.038 --> 00:33:32.763
We're going to work on sleep.
00:33:32.763 --> 00:33:40.021
We're going to work on stress sugar you know how to reduce sugar out of your diet and it starts on the 24th of June.
00:33:40.583 --> 00:33:48.936
So all right and actually we're recording this in May of 2024 and I told I promised, alison, I would get this out as soon as possible so that you could take advantage of it.
00:33:48.936 --> 00:34:03.981
And, alison, I don't know if I have the links, but I will get the links, links that will lead to your reboot so people could sign up because, even though you are in Europe, you have a virtual practice and anybody can participate in this reboot, right?
00:34:04.730 --> 00:34:05.432
Yeah, absolutely.
00:34:05.432 --> 00:34:07.478
I work with clients all over the world.
00:34:07.478 --> 00:34:09.552
I actually have a lot of clients in the US.
